Abhishek Rajak

My name is Abhishek. My parents chose this name because they are a big fan of Amitabh Bachchan and they had already named their eldest as ‘Amit’. I was born and grew up in a small town in Assam. My childhood memories include playing barefoot with children in the neighborhood, walking along the river side, chasing dragonflies in grass fields, and climbing high up on trees to pick the untouched ripe guavas.

At present, my work is inspired by the endless curiosity of the human mind, imagination and a hope for a better world. I work as a Project Research Scientist in an ICMR project aiming to reduce the risk of suicide among school and college going students. I am a practicing Clinical Psychologist who aims to decolonize therapy and find ways of making therapeutic practices accessible to all.

When no one is around, I obsessively play chess, maybe walk slowly around trees and admire how the branches spread and expand in many ways. I like watching squirrels hold something with their tiny arms. I collect books from every place I travel too. Cooking food, listening to songs, and writing letters to old friends is something I cherish.

I dream of a world where Brahmanical patriarchy, class, and rigid social institutions do not dictate and oppress people. The river, mountains, trees, birds, animals and humans co-exist without letting corporate organizations destroy everything with time. I dream of a world where rest is not an afterthought, overwork is not a batch of honor and kindness is an abundance and not a scarcity. I dream of a world where love and care sits at the center of every intervention that is carried out in the name of development.
