Mayuri Handique

Hi I’m Mayuri. I was born in a small town on the borders of Assam called Namrup. But home, for me, has never been a single pin on a map. Pieces of me also belong to Dibrugarh, Kolkata, Guwahati, Tezpur, and now to Arunachal Pradesh.

I spent many years becoming a clinical psychologist because it was a dream I had carried since childhood. Achieving it was both deeply meaningful and strangely disorienting. I realised that I had spent so much time trying to become something that I had forgotten to ask what kind of life I wanted to live afterwards. These days, I find myself living somewhere between disillusionment and agency. I am still learning the outlines of my own power, limitations, privileges, and marginalisation. I hope these understandings will continue to shape how I work, grounding my practice in an awareness of the social systems that shape our lives.

I currently work as a mental health researcher, asking questions about young people’s lives and contributing, in my own small way, to conversations around the preventionof student suicide. I am also a fellow with Fellowship for Community Well-being and Ecological Belonging 2025-26 at The Well-being Lab, Tezpur.

Outside of work, I have a habit of collecting hobbies. If I can make something with my hands, I’ll probably want to learn it. Crochet, painting, sewing, making suncatchers & jewellery, pottery I have dabbled in it all! My favourite time to create, however, is midnight. When everyone is asleep and the world becomes wonderfully indifferent to my existence, you will usually find me at a desk overflowing with wire, beads, pliers, books, and half-finished ideas. An audio horror story or a true crime podcast will probably be playing somewhere in the background. These are the hours when I feel most free and most like myself!

I hope to spend my life collecting people, places, stories, and ideas. More than anything, I think I’m collecting new ways of becoming; hoping to build a life that leaves room for curiosity, for making mistakes, and for growing through the misadventures along the way.
